Partnership With Local Chamber of Commerce Improves Community Care

Piedmont Health Services really means business, especially when it comes to protecting the health of the community. Back in 2009, it started a unique partnership with Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce to provide access to more affordable health services for employees of small businesses and their families.

Since the high price tag associated with most health care services—even for people with health care insurance—can cause many Americans to forgo needed treatments, this is an important way to incorporate health care reform principles to try to bridge the gap and ensure people take care of themselves and their family members. It also provides a unique opportunity for health care providers to educate patients about the need to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The program doesn’t provide health insurance, but rather provides discounted rates for services for participants. Through this program, visits to primary care physicians are $60, including any needed in-house lab tests, and prescriptions for generic drugs filled through one of Piedmont Health’s own on-site pharmacies are $10 each. Non-formulary drugs can be up to 50 percent off through this plan. Dental services are also provided at a discounted rate.

There is no cost to be involved in the program. Eligibility is simple: Any individual chamber member or employee who works for a business that is a member of the Chamber of Commerce can participate. This includes their immediate family members as well.
