Where Leadership Meets Purpose: Virtua Health CEO Dennis Pullin Reflects on What Drives Meaningful Influence
What is leadership? According to McKinsey: “Leadership is a set of mindsets and behaviors that aligns people in a collective direction, enables them to work together and accomplish shared goals, and helps them adjust to changing environments.”

We know it when we see it — and we know it when we don’t. A case in point, as of this writing: The U.S. government has been shut down for more than a month. As the impasse continues, a large swath of Americans is suffering.
We yearn for authentic leadership that inspires and unifies people, and Dennis Pullin, CEO of Virtua Health, epitomizes it. His 2025 book, Suited for Leadership: How to Show Up with Purpose to Have a Lasting Impact, is a master class on leadership that brings people together for the greater good.
Pullin stresses that the primary motivation for becoming a leader should not be what we can get for ourselves. “We might step into a leadership position for more excitement and challenges, a better title, proximity to other leaders, or a bump in income,” he says. “There’s nothing wrong with any of those reasons, but they obscure the most important reason — and hopefully why we’re leading in the first place: to do good for others.”
This message of servant leadership could not be more relevant or needed.
Here, we share a few nuggets from the mother lode of Pullin’s accumulated wisdom and how his inspirational leadership spreads out from Virtua Health to the community it serves and benefits the industry as a whole.
