Bring Your Physicians and Administrators Together for Business Success
“When is the last time your C-suite reached out to your medical staff to find out what they want and need? If the answer is ‘never’ (or at least not anytime recently that you can remember), you could be missing out on some important opportunities to help your hospital or other health care setting reach its full potential,” says Dr. David Birdsall, Vice President of CEP America. CEP provides clinical staff for more than 200 practices throughout the United States.Physician alignment is more important than ever to the success of a health care organization, says Birdsall. He adds that such alignment typically exists in the framework of a culture where you and your clinicians work toward a shared vision.
“Developing and maintaining a positive culture probably isn’t in your job description as a leader. But make no mistake, it’s one of the most important things you can do,” Birdsall stresses.
He explains that what he is referring to by “culture” is really the core of your organization and what it stands for. “Culture is expressed continuously by what your people do and say. For this reason, it can’t be faked or changed through directives. It has to be changed through hearts and minds,” he adds.
When staff members are engaged, they will truly care about their organization and will be willing to go above and beyond their specific job descriptions to do all they can to support their colleagues and to provide the best-quality care for patients. But when staff members are not operating within a supportive culture, they may simply do the basics of their job and not be willing to do anything extra. In the latter scenario, your patients’ outcomes and your bottom line may suffer as a result.
